Babysitter Saves Life of Infant Using Skills Learned in Red Cross Course.  < Back

Ashlee Doolittle, 14, recently saved the life of an infant she was babysitting, using skills she learned in the Red Cross Babysitting class. Here is a message that Ashlees sent to the Red Cross:

I am SO glad I took that babysitting class!! I was watching a 2-month-old tonight, and she was asleep. Then I heard her crying so I went to check on her. When I got there I picked her up and stuff started coming out of her nose and mouthshe couldnt breatheshe was choking! So I did what they taught us to do (back blows and abdominal thrusts) a few times, then she still wasnt breathing so I checked her airway. Then I turned her over again upside down and hit her back with the palm of my hand again. She finally got a few breaths. I thought it was over, but she did it again, at this point she was turning blue! So I thought I would try it one more time before I called 911. As I ran in towards the phone and did it one more time and she was fine then. I just cried a little bit and I watched her real close. She was fine after that. I was there by myself, and her mom said she was glad that I was the one with her when it happened because she would have freaked out and not known what to do. So that class did pay off!!!

Love Ash

Ashlees story tells it all-training is important even if you are keeping a child for a few minutes.
Please contact our office if you or someone you know used CPR or First Aid training to save or prolong a life.
