Riders Saddle Up For Disaster Relief-Ride For USA

September 2002

Second Annual Event Raises $613.00

Riders carry our nation's flag along the noth frontage road of I-44

Area horse owners combined their love for trail riding with a desire to support local American Red Cross disaster relief at the 2nd Annual Ride For USA. On Friday evening September 13th, a patriotic ceremony of remembrance officially opened the campgrounds and began an evening of entertainment.

Leading off, the Missouri National Guard honor guard presented our nations colors. Next, Stars and Steeds horseback precision drill team galloped across the field and delivered an exciting performance for all in attendance. Guest speakers for the evening included Pastor Jess Gibson of Cornerstone Church, Mary K. Murray who lost her barn in a fire, a representative of the Webster County Fire Department and Gail Gartside from the Missouri Equine Council.

Johnny Brooks, owner of Brooks Hardwood Floors, sponsored live music by Six Shooters. Decked out in neckerchiefs and spurs, Six Shooters opened their musical saddlebags and delighted campers with bluegrass and gospel selections. The beautiful late-summer evening concluded with a moonlit trail ride. Thirty-eight riders saddled up to enjoy great company and cool evening temperatures.

On Saturday morning, 46 riders jumped back in the saddle for the Ride for USA. Carrying the American flag, horseback riders of all ages trotted along the north frontage road of I-44 between Northview and Strafford.

Last year, Ride For USA raised $462 for the American Red Cross Liberty Fund to support victims of the September 11th attacks. This year, donations from riders will help provide Red Cross in 14 southwest Missouri counties. Ride For USA participants donated $613.00 that will be used to supply emergency food, clothes and shelter to families who become victims of house fires, flooding or other natural disasters.

The Greater Ozarks Chapter of the American Red Cross is grateful to all riders and to organizers Gary and Lydia Brooks. The dedication to this event and the desire to help others is admirable and brings home the fact that Together, we can save a life.
