DSHR System
(National Disaster Team)
General Requirements
In addition to the requirements listed, the special nature of disaster relief work imposes requirements and restrictions on those who wish to participate in the DSHR system. Participants in the DSHR system must
- Have attained the age of majority in their state of permanent residence.
- Provided a Social Security Number.
- Have received a form education sufficient to meet the demand of disaster work, preferably holding at leas a high school diploma or equivalency.
- Hold a valid drivers license or have on file and exception approved by the manager of the DSHR Unit at national headquarters.
- Hold a current first aid certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
- Complete the Red Cross training course Introduction to Disaster Services and appropriate function-specific training.
- Possess the demonstrated knowledge, skill, and abilities, listed.
- Successfully participate in unit Disaster Services program activities.
- Be available to service on disaster relief operations with little or no advance notice, preferably for three (3) weeks.
- Be flexible about travel plans and serving on relief operations.
- Be willing to travel by any common mode of transportation to any of the states, commonwealths, or territories of the United States.
- Be willing to live and work in adverse conditions.
- Be willing to work long hours daily for extended periods, with little free time.
- Be in good health and sign a statement to that effect.
- Adhere to the standards for identification of Red Cross workers.
- Sign the Code of Conduct and Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Movement.
